Cliff's and the CONREP
(Connecticut Rider Education Program)

PLEASE NOTE:Administration (sign up etc) for ALL Cliff's Cycle Revolution classes is handled by a site manager based out of Naugatuck Valley Community College ( NVCC). Cliff's staff cannot provide information regarding class availability or registration.

For class registration or other information please email Naugatuck Valley Community College or call 203-575-8123. More information can be found at the NVCC website: http://www.nvcc.commnet.edu/community-education/motorcycle.shtml

Cliff's Cycle Revolution is excited to be part of the Connecticut Rider Education Program and to be involved with motorcycle skills training.

All BRC classes (classroom and range riding) will be conducted at our new facility - 465 Federal Rd in Brookfield CT 06804 starting March 2009.

The following courses were developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. They address issues raised from studying motorcycle crashes and identifying skills absent in the operators of the motorcycles. Safety is the key factor.

Basic Rider Course (BRC)
An introductory course intended for a new rider with little or no experience (although some veteran riders have found that they learned more than expected). Motorcycles are provided for on-cycle training. Graduates receive a waiver of any additional, Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle, on-cycle license tests.

The introductory course requires no experience and we provide a motorcycle for you. You cannot ride your own motorcycle, even if you have one.
The course consists of six hours of classroom and at least 11 hours of on-cycle instruction. ALL SESSIONS MUST BE COMPLETED TO PASS THE CLASS.

A knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test are also required for passing the class in Connecticut, when you pass, DMV will waive their on-cycle test! (You still have to pass their knowledge test and pay the fee.)

PREREQUISITES
In order to participate, CONREP requires every rider to be prepared; specifically you must:

  • Be able to ride a bicycle.
  • Provide a signed waiver.
  • Provide a signed parental permission slip (if under 18)
  • Have a valid driver's license (does not have to be motorcycle license)
  • Wear a DOT approved helmet in class, with eye protection (built in or glasses)
  • Wear full fingered gloves, preferably leather
  • Wear long sleeved shirts or jackets
  • Wear sturdy pants (no shorts)
  • Wear footgear that covers your ankles
  • Be in a proper state of mind.

All sites in CT loan helmets to the class. Since class is conducted in ALL weather conditions (except for icing or snow), you are advised to bring: Wet weather gear-rain jackets, rain pants, etc. Cold weather gear-warm jackets, sweaters, etc. Water or other beverages. Lunch/snacks as necessary
**Please note that any unsafe acts will result in dismissal of the student.**

    BENEFITS
Besides learning how to ride, it may entitle students with passing grade to receive an insurance discount on their motorcycle insurance of 10%. (See your agent for specific details.)
DMV will waive the CT riding portion of your Motorcycle License application for the first 60 days after you pass the course. You don't need to own (or borrow) a bike to get your license!
Learn how to enjoy yourself more when you ride. Meet new friends.

  • Intermediate Rider Course (IRC)
Designed for riders with some riding experience and a motorcycle operator’s learners permit. Students use their own motorcycle. Graduates receive a waiver of any additional. Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle on-cycle license tests.
    Experienced Rider Course (ERC)
Intended for licensed riders with a minimum of six months and six hundred miles riding experience. Students use their own motorcycle.

The experienced rider course is a one-day course designed to improve rider skills in braking, evasive maneuvers and turning. It provides the experienced motorcyclist with "street strategies" necessary for survival. The course consists of a full day of both classroom and on-cycle instruction on the student's own motorcycle, usually with a morning classroom session of 3-4 hours and an afternoon riding session of 4 hours.

    PREREQUISITES
In order to participate, CONREP requires every rider to be prepared, specifically you must:

  • Have 6 months (or 500 miles) riding experience.
  • Provide a signed waiver.
  • Have a street legal motorcycle (it will be inspected).
  • Provide proof of ownership of the motorcycle to be used in the course or permission to use from the owner.
  • Provide proof of liability insurance for the motorcycle.
  • Provide permission slip (if under 18).
  • Have a valid motorcycle license.
  • Wear a DOT approved helmet in class, with eye protection (built in or glasses).
  • Wear full fingered gloves, preferably leather.
  • Wear long sleeved shirts or jackets.
  • Wear sturdy pants (no shorts).
  • Wear footgear that covers your ankles.
  • Be in proper state of mind.

Class is conducted in ALL weather conditions (except for icing or snow), you are advised to bring: Wet weather gear-rain jackets, rain pant, etc. Cold weather gear-warm jackets, sweater, etc. Water or other beverages. Lunch/snacks as necessary.

Please note that unsafe acts will result in the dismissal of the student.

    Stayin Safe
Want to learn what ‘Moving Away From Danger’ means, how do you create ‘360° Awareness’, what ‘Riding Plans’ are and how you become a thinking, safer rider?

Ian Shuttler, who is the Stayin’ Safe instructor for their renowned real world, real-time advanced on-street training program in Connecticut will hold a short Advanced Riding Seminar and provide answers to these questions on Saturday 26th when the BMW Demo Truck will be at Cliff’s. The initial session will start at 1:30 pm and possibly followed by a second at 3:30 pm. These times are flexible as we fit in around all the other activities, including Teach McNiel’s display.
These seminars are short and informal where Ian presents interesting riding situations via photos, diagrams and videos and facilitates audience discussion on how best we should deal with these hazards by ‘Reading the Road’. Ian will be present all day and happy to explain more about the Stayin’ Safe program based in Connecticut. Ian has extensive UK, Alpine and US riding experience and long involvement with advanced on-road coaching in the UK. If these short seminars awaken your interest in advanced on-road training then why not join us on one of our training tours? Completed an ERC, enjoyed a Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic? Then Stayin’ Safe takes it out onto the street! Further details are available on the Stayin’Safe website at www.stayinsafe.com. Founded by the internationally-recognized motorcycle safety expert Lawrence Grodsky, the Stayin' Safe program focuses on development of the mental and strategic aspects of motorcycling--skills that not only enhance riding safety but make motorcycling infinitely more enjoyable. Unlike most training programs, students have the opportunity to observe and practice proven techniques in real-world riding environments where carefully-trained instructors evaluate technique and provide real-time coaching in a non-threatening manner using bike to bike radios. There's something for riders of all skill and experience levels. Stayin’ Safe is excited about their expansion to the north east with 4 more tours planned for the 2010 riding season.

    Stayin'Safe

Stayin’ Safe is best known for its established on-street training tours that are conducted in a growing number of locations from just west of Washington, DC to California. But we also offer custom training tours for small groups in virtually any location around the country. For those wanting private, one-on-one training, Stayin’ Safe is able to put together special training sessions in each of our established tour areas or, for those willing to cover instructor travel expenses, in virtually any location.

Here’s what we do ... Stayin’ Safe provides real world, on-road training. Regardless of which training program you choose, our training programs are similar in that they offer riders of nearly every motorcycle type and experience level a fun opportunity to learn visual strategies and techniques for smoother cornering and safer riding on twisty, scenic roads. With a target ratio of three students for each instructor, we conduct our training primarily on mountain roads, in rural settings and smallish towns with limited riding on divided highways and in urban environments (although we do have customized programs available for both).

And here's how we do it ... Using one-way radio communication, instructors provide coaching in real-world situations. This approach enables riders to apply new visual strategies and to sharpen cornering and braking skills en route in real time. In addition to the real-time coaching, our instructors conduct “chalk talks”, creating a virtual classroom along the roadside. These breaks provide opportunities to illustrate concepts and address any questions participants may have. For more detail of each of our training offerings, select from the tour options listed in this section beneath the "Our Programs" banner.
